Medicine and Side Effects…what you need to know!!

Today we are talking about medicine and how most people have no idea about how it affects their health and body. Did you know that prolonged or heavy use of Tylenol, Ibuprofen or Naproxen can damage the liver and kidneys? The New England Journal of Medicine said that, “Taking more than 1000 pills in a lifetime or more than 365 pills per year appears to double the odds of developing kidney disease.”And did you know that although Aspirin has been shown to reduce the rate of heart attack, that it actually increases the risk of stroke?

Long term use of acetaminophen appears to increase the risk of kidney disease.

8 to 10% of end-stage kidney disease may be attributable to acetaminophen. Taking more than 1,000 pills in a lifetime or more than 365 pills per year appears to double the odds of developing kidney disease.  N.E.J.M.

Dr. Paul Whelton of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health states, “We need to be careful about the medications, whether they are over-the-counter or prescription. If a drug has some beneficial effect, it is likely to have some adverse effect.” Switching to other pain relievers is not necessarily advisable, as other drugs also have side effects. *

*USA Today, Dec. 1994

A moderate overdose can damage the liver of people who are fasting or using alcohol. The recommended maximum dose is eight extra-strength tablets in 24 hours; liver damage was caused in some cases by 10 or 12 tablets.*

USE OF ANALGESICS FOUND TO PROMOTE CHRONIC PAIN

The Rocky Mountain News reported Aspirin may be effective in reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke, but, the best thing a person can do is get off the pain killers. Two-thirds of chronic headache sufferers benefit from the withdrawal of medications. Evidently, at a certain point in a chronic headache sufferer’s intake of analgesic medication (including aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and the stronger narcotic painkillers), the headache becomes drug induced. *
